Poland says never sought US sanctions vs Nord Stream-2 project

WARSAW, Sep 19 (PRIME) -- Poland has never sought introduction of the U.S. sanctions against Russia-led Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline project, Krzysztof Szczerski, Poland’s secretary of state, said at a news conference Wednesday.

“Poland has never sought sanctions from the U.S.,” he said.

“Poland only provided arguments to the U.S. that the pipeline is posing a threat to Europe’s energy security,” he said. “It is the sovereign decision of the U.S. what conclusions it will make from our arguments.”

President Donald Trump said late Tuesday after a meeting with his Poland’s counterpart Andrzej Duda that the U.S. does not plan to introduce sanctions against the Nord Stream-2 project, while Duda said he hopes that Trump will stop construction of the pipeline.

The Nord Stream-2 project envisages construction of two lines of a natural gas pipeline with an annual capacity of up to 55 billion cubic meters, running from the Russian shore to Germany under the Baltic Sea. Russian gas giant Gazprom will implement the project together with Germany’s E.ON and BASF, Royal Dutch Shell, Austria’s OMV, and France’s Engie.
